Kirby Smith Middle School is one of the 47 middle schools in the Duval County Public Schools system. It is located in downtown Jacksonville, Florida.[1] Currently the principal is June Marshall.[2]
The school is named for Edmund Kirby Smith, a general in the Confederate Army during the U. S. Civil War.
Kirby Smith is an official magnet school dedicated to Math, Science, and Technology. They also have a wide array of extracurricular activities as well as after-school clubs.[3] Kirby Smith's Colors consist of red, white, and blue.
There are several sports teams for both boys and girls in seventh and eighth grade. They are football, baseball, basketball, soccer, track and field, swimming, volleyball, softball, and cheerleading.
As of the 2010-2011 school year, the demographics are: 889 enrolled students, 60% Black, 28% White, 5% Hispanic, 4% Mixed, and 3% Asian.[4]
Kirby Smith's Electives are, Robotics, TV Production or Journalism, World Languages, Spanish I, Computer Application, and Video Game Design.
Clubs include: Video Game Design Club, Robotics Club, Robotics Competition Club, Yearbook Club, Guitar Club, and Video Game Club.
Upon entering 7th grade, and continuing through 8th grade, students find that there is at least one sports season going on at any point during the year. Ladies who qualify can enjoy basketball, soccer, track and field, swimming, softball and cheer leading. Gentlemen who qualify can participate in basketball, soccer, track and field, swimming, baseball, and football.
